Here's my thoughts on my received CD:How do Hank! Nice to speak to you again!1) Is this James Yorkston covering Erik B and Rakim? Not JY no but that would be funny! The excellent Wounded Knee. This guy can do no wrong I reckon. Great live as well. Always surprised he never played any fence gigs. or maybe he did and I missed it. His album House Music is available on cassette - you like cassettes no?
2) There's a lot of this sort of thing gets DJed in the pubs round my way. Good summery reggae. I don't often listen to this kind of thing at home, but I always enjoy a dance to it if I'm outThis is Mungos HiFi from Glasgow. Good fun. Years ago I used to have this thing where the second track on any mix cd had to be reggae of some sort. Maybe a way of dealing with that difficult second track thing? Every one loves a bit of bassy summery reggae Shirley?
3) This is great. Funky but not in an american way. Feels odd in a good way. Is it German? 1970s? I really like it, anyhowCan - I'm so green. Yes German yes 70s. Love a bit of Can. Some of the space out bits can get in the way but still...
4) I didn't like this track so much at first - felt a bit too slickly produced or something (which is something I'm quite averse to with African music) … But by about the fourth listen I'm really loving it. I'd like to drive along with this playing loudly.I know what you mean about this - wasn't sure at first myself but it has something about it. Its maybe a bit long as well. Infectious in its own way. The band are from Edinburgh but I've only ever heard this one track and never heard of them play anywhere. I always think of this song as something that would go down well mid afternoon couple of beers into an outdoor festival sort of thing.
5) quite funky keyboard-led track. I like the guy's laugh. Sounds vaguely familiar. quite long. Not bad.I've been mainlining this guy for a few months now. Can't get enough. It is long but I think the groove deserves it. one of these mystery music guys no-one seems to know a lot about. Good doc about him here....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GiaRp0M2fxE
6) I really like this - quite strange feeling dub track, which goes off on a bit of a synth-y tangent at the end which makes it seem like maybe it's not quite what I think it is (in terms of maybe who made it)I loved this as soon as I heard it. I've always loved south American commentators and how passionate they are. This seems to be about Senna F1 driver. I actually don't like F1 at all but I think this is so well put together. Wee Stevie Mason this is.
7) someone making music and watching the game at the time? Sounds bedroom-y - is this you, mixer?Me?! lol. Immigrant - I think this is from the Avalanche record shop sampler. Thought it went well with the previous track.
8) This is quite perfect in its own way. I like the arrangement, how it strips back in the middle with all those weird solo instrumental lines. I'm a big fan of the Buena Vista stuff and this guy in particular. Think he was quite old when it was recorded but it sound great! A song about brothers falling out.
9) This sounds Nigerian or thereabouts. There's kinda so much of this stuff been dug up in recent years - all those Soundway Records compilations, etc - and, without becoming a highlife aficionado, I find its hard for any particular tracks to stand out, but it's a good sound. It might be a bit obvious from this cd that I've been getting into this sort of stuff of late. Nigerian yes. good groove again.
10) I like the singing on thisA similar groove to the last track. I love this sort of raw sound.
11) I'd very much like to know what language this is in. Bits of it sound German. Is it German? I know I asked that earlier.. anyway, the language is pretty guttural feels interestingly incongruous with the music. This is a crazy Moroccan dude covering James Brown. This makes me laugh and dance and the same time. Great fun.
12) 60s electric bluesy type of thing. I bet the singer looked great when he sung this - he's got an amazing shout deliveryYeah I agree, I bet he looked da bomb. Another one for the dance floor.
13) I refer you to my comment for track two, although I think I preferred that track to this one.Yeah this is the reggae sound system book end mix!
14) I'm guessing Nigeria/Ghana/that neck of the woods again. top energy.Yep I think its Nigeria again. I'd love to be able to play percussion like that for that long. Again this track is all about the groove!
I enjoyed this mix a lot - thanks mystery-mixer. Apart from the intro, I'd very much enjoy going out and dancing to any of this. Tracks 3, 4 and 6, in particular, I'd be keen to track down for repeated home listening. Jolly good show.Glad you enjoyed it. It was perhaps a bit dance heavy but everyone like to boog-a-loo don't they!
