So, 2014. That has been a year. Not only that, but it was a year in which some longform records were released. I don't think any of us would argue with that. But what were they?? James Hankins has made a big list of some records which he thought were probably released this year. Here it is: beansonbread.tumblr.com/post/103648792003/b-o-b-awards-best-album-2014That made me start thinking about records which I think probably came out this year. I've only heard a few on James' list (Aphex Twins, James Yorkstons, Kinlaw/Skyler, J. Common), so can't really be sure that he hasn't just made most of them up, but here are ten records he didn't mention that I reckon almost definitely came out in 2014 and which I listened to and thought were well good. Chad VanGaalen - Shrink DustLegowelt - Crystal Cult 2080Ravioli Me Away - The Inevitable AlbumMartha - Courting StrongAnalogous Doom - Departing The HourglassKemialliset Ystavat - Alas Rattoisaa Virtaa Goodiepal - Battlefleet GothicInsect Heroes - ApocalypsoRandolph's Leap - Clumsy KnotKeel Her - Keel HerTop fave would probably be between Keel Her and Ravioli Me Away. Both very strong pieces of work. But this is probably my fave video, from the Kemialliset Ystavat album. It has a Christmas tree on the cover, and is a well Christmassy album, so that seems fitting anyway. Anyone else?

(NB. Insect Heroes is only not top fave as it was my top fave on somesuch similar forum list last year. See, tricky business this whole what-year-was-this-released thing.)

Ah, I see. I'm sorry Jah, but you will now be sought out and terminated. But first... can you think of any records that may have come out this year and that you listened to and also liked? I seem to have a lot to catch up on. Presumably never.

I really liked the angel Olsen album. Future islands too. Haven't bought that much new stuff this year.

Did those come out this year? Are you sure?

There are at least four or five records which came out this year, which I'm sure would almost certainly be in my favourites, but I simply haven't been able to afford yet. It's hard to keep up, even with relatively narrow tastes. I don't understand people who complain about there being no good new music, there is far, far too much.

Nice to see you Mr. Fswan!
No... no, I don't think any of those were this year...
I'm listening to the Aphex album now, what a piece of work! Incredible. Forgot about Gruff too... saw the film, and the gig, but haven't picked up the album yet... and, dear God, still haven't heard Mug Museum! Or, er, pretty much all of the others... too much stuff.

I think this is everything I bought or acquired this year, most of them appeared this year. 'Seaside Arcade Bingo Patrol' - Abdoujaparov
A.T.D.R.I.P. - Akira The Don (featuring my favourite bit of plagiarism this year. 'Where's Me Jumper?' by the Sultans of Ping as an anti-austerity song.) 'Urge For Offal' - Half Man Half Biscuit'This Leaden Pall' - Half Man Half Biscuit'EN2' - Erica Nockalls'Secret Soundz Vol 1 & 2' - Pictish Trail'Clumsy Knot' - Randolph's Leap'The Man Upstairs' - Robyn Hitchcock'Coachella X' - Midnitemen - Steaming available here - remixes of other folks material and a couple original tracks - midnitemen.com/'First Contact' - Midnitemen (see link above) 'Nanobots' - They Might Be Giants
'Blood and Brambles' - Mikey Georgeson and the Civilised Scene
'Golden Crates' - The Lancashire Hotpots
'Crust For Life' - The Lancashire Hotpots
'A Hard Day's Pint' - The Lancashire Hotpots The Final Comedown (Live Brixton Nov 2014) - Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine Twin Peaks SoundtrackThe entire De La Soul back catalogue since they gave the whole lot away free earlier this year. 'Caustic Window' - Aphex Twin 'Syro' - Aphex TwinI'm normally wary of re-issues, as I worry they are the shit kind, remastered with an extra track or a few b-sides thrown in, but not the Jesus Jones re-issues. They're CD sized hardback books with 2 x CD & 1 x DVD containing around 40 tracks on each one, b-sides, remixes, radio sessions, live stuff, promo videos, live videos, and ridiculously cheap so they were. - Liquidizer
- Doubt
- Perverse
- Already
I can't stop listening to the re-issue of Doubt at the moment. This is currently stuck in my head.

Jesus Jones are like better-produced early Shamen, with less drug references, aren't they? Similar vocals anyway...
I would have quite liked to see one of the final Carter gigs... although the last time I saw them was at one of the first reunion gigs at Brixton, and it was proper rowdy... too rowdy for an old man like me! Like being trapped in a lift full of builders when the new year clock strikes midnight...
I bought myself Syro for my birthday mid-Decemeber... been on constant rotation since... ridiculously good.

I forgot Naram's March of the Gremlins. Headphone murderation. And probably the best use of an Omnichord outside of a Jonnie Common record.
